SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Saint Mary's golf team put together two solid rounds on the opening day of the 2026 R.E.L. Invitational to sit in fourth place with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
The Gaels finished the morning round at 6-under-par behind a stellar 68 (-4) from senior Aidan Lee. Lee tallied five birdies and an eagle on the par-five 14th. That 14th hole proved to be a pivotal one for the Gaels as the four counting scores shot a combined 6-under-par on that hole. Sam Baumuller and Avery Lazarski both birdied and then fellow senior Mitchell Hoey eagled himself to swing Saint Mary's into the top five.
Baumuller and Lazarski each finished their opening round with a 71 (-1) as Saint Mary's sat in fourth place ahead of its second round later that afternoon.
The second 18 gave some troubles early in the round for the Gaels but they pulled their round back to red figures with some momentous holes once again. The four counting scores each birdied the par-five eighth and then the group was 4-under-par on the par-five second which featured a big-time eagle from Inigo Izuzquiza. Baumuller and Hoey birdied their final hole of the day to help Saint Mary's to a 2-under-par second round, allowing them to remain alone in fourth place at 8-under-par.
Baumuller had the low second round for the Gaels with a 69 (-3), jumping 14 spots on the individual leaderboard to sit inside the top ten. Izuzquiza finished his second round at 2-under-par and jumped 26 spots to get into the top-40.
Fellow WCC member San Diego shot up the leaderboard with a huge 14-under-par second round, putting them in first place at 19-under heading into Tuesday. The Gaels sit ahead of 47th ranked Colorado and 30th BYU and are the second highest WCC program in the field, ahead of Pacific and San Francisco.
