MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team wrapped up its 2026 home campaign this Sunday afternoon, drawing with the LMU Lions 1-1 behind a 73rd-minute equalizer for freshman forward Cyrus Shafie. After falling behind in the 13th minute, the Gaels rallied with their second consecutive match of 20+ shots and salvaged a draw against a formidable Lions squad for their sixth draw of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
While the Gaels and Lions battled early on, it was LMU who found the back of the net thanks to a first goal of the season from midfielder Matthew Sacristan. Saint Mary's continued to put the pressure on the Lions back line, nearly finding the back of the net in the 25th minute when a goal-bound free kick from Cameron Kobey was saved by goalkeeper Ky Mani Dade. The Gaels would end the half down a goal despite recording double the shots of the Lions (8-4).
The breakthrough for Saint Mary's nearly came in the 64th minute, when fellow freshman Brett Seemuller found the back of the net on a deflected shot, but the goal was ultimately disallowed through video review due to a foul in the build-up. Just nine minutes later in the 73rd minute, Gaels' throw-in specialist Ryan Firestone fired in a long throw to the six-yard box. Jaydon Whittaker got the first touch with a flicked header towards the back post that found the left foot of Shafie. Shafie's first-time shot found the back of the net to tie the game at one for his first collegiate goal. Saint Mary's continued to knock on the door for the potential game-winner, but the full 90 concluded at one apiece despite 20 shots from the Gaels for the second time this week.
