MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's men's cross country team is set to compete at the 2026 West Coast Conference Championships on Friday in San Diego. The Gaels enter the conference meet coming off of a number of personal-best performances at the Bronco Invitational and will look to build on last season's fourth-place finish at the WCC Championships, which matched the second-best conference championship result in program history.
Saint Mary's last outing was the Bronco Invitational, where the team finished 20th out of 22 teams and recorded numerous personal-best performances throughout the 8K race. Senior Diego Urdiales led the Gaels across the finish line with a personal-best time of 25:31.1. Freshman Noah Barthel followed closely behind with a personal record of 25:31.2, while fellow freshman Dylan Mehnert made his collegiate debut with a time of 25:32.4. Sophomores Luke Davis (25:34.8) and Jacob Schuetze (25:35.9) rounded out the Gaels' top five and both set their own personal best times.
Leading the Gaels into the conference championships will be redshirt senior Joseph O'Connell, who has put together a strong season for Saint Mary's. The Milford, England native holds the group's fastest 8K time this season, which he recorded at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, finishing in sixth place overall with a personal-best time of 23:58.8. Joining O'Connell are graduate student Stuart Terrill, fellow seniors Damian Frausto, Jacob Moffett, Alan Solari, Joel Fischer, and Ethan Gray, junior Dennis Cheruiyot, and sophomores Anthony Sharp and Jackson Woolf.
At last year's WCC Championships, Saint Mary's finished fourth out of 10 teams, which matched the program's second-best conference finish and its highest result since 2000. Divan Du Plooy led the Gaels with a ninth-place finish, clocking a time of 23:42.8 to earn First Team All-WCC honors. His performance also marked the first time a Saint Mary's runner had received the distinction since 2016.
The 2026 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships will take place at Tecolote Shores North in San Diego's Mission Bay Park. The men's 8K is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. The race will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live results can be found at https://www.rtspt.com/events/wcc/xc2026/.
