STOCKTON, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team picked up its tenth victory of the season Wednesday evening, storming into Stockton and coming away with a massive 2-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers. Ashlyn Vaughn got the Gaels going early with her tenacious pressing that led to a 12th-minute goal off a take-away from the Tigers keeper. While Pacific would level it at one apiece in the 19th minute, a soaring header across the box from true freshman Brianna Jurasek in the 53rd minute would put the Gaels back in front for good and earn them a crucial victory in the West Coast Conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels were off and running early on in the match, as forward Brittany Holden forced an early acrobatic save in the fifth minute from Pacific goalkeeper and WCC save leader Ava Wells. In the 12th minute, forward Ashlyn Vaughn capitalized on a loose touch from Wells at the start of the Tigers build-up and slotted her left-footed shot in the top left corner to give the Gaels an early lead in Stockton. The Tigers would then level the match in the 18th minute off a deflected shot from forward Kaya Rosa. Despite the equalizer, Saint Mary's continued to pressure the Tigers back line throughout the half and outshot them 6-5 going into the break.
Forward Maren Hoovel provided quality minutes off the bench yet again for the Gaels and nearly found the back of the net in the 48th minute. A long cross from defender Anna Emperador found Hoovel's feet who fired a dangerous shot on goal, forcing another quality save from Wells. Just five minutes later though in the 53rd minute, an inviting cross from defender Taylor Farnum found a gliding Brianna Jurasek in the six-yard box. Jurasek fought through her defender and perfectly flicked the header attempt into the far corner for her fourth goal of the season and the eventual game-winner for the Gaels. The Gaels were able to hold on for the 2-1 victory thanks to another strong showing from the defensive line and a solid 90-minute performance from goalkeeper Kate Plachy, who picked up her 26th career victory for the Gaels, now tied for third all-time with Gael great Taylor Poland.
With just two conference games remaining, Saint Mary's now sits in a tie for fourth place at 13 points along with Santa Clara. The path for the program's first ever WCC Regular Season title is still alive and will continue on Saturday as Saint Mary's hosts Seattle U.

Saint Mary's will return to action this coming Saturday at 1 p.m., as they take on the Seattle U Redhawks in a crucial WCC top-five battle. The match can be streamed live on ESPN+, with tickets available for purchase HERE or at smcgaels.com/tickets.
