SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's baseball team rattled off ten hits through seven innings but fell in run-rule fashion, 13-3 to UC Santa Barbara Tuesday night.
The Gaels got within a run in the third inning after an RBI double from Jacob Johnson, but the Gauchos scored four in the bottom half of the third and recorded another five-run inning in the sixth to seal the ten-run victory.
Sophomore catcher Ian Armstrong returned behind the plate for Saint Mary's and went 3-for-3 with the bat including a run scored and his first triple of the season. Brady Petit and Cody Kashimoto were the other two players with multiple hits in the game while Jacob Johnson and Dario Freschi had the two RBI hits for Saint Mary's.
HOW IT HAPPENED
True freshman Jake Nobles made his third start of the season and got into the third but couldn't finish the inning. Three of the four runs would get charged to the freshman as he took his first loss of the season.
UC Santa Barbara hit a two-out three-run homer in the first, but Saint Mary's responded with runs in the second and third inning. Right fielder Diego Castellanos reached base with a single to start the second and came around to score on a wild pitch to get the Gaels on the board. In the third, Saint Mary's put two runners on again and this time Jacob Johnson cashed in with a two-out double down the left field line to score Tanner Griffith and put the Gaels within a run.
The momentum would be short lived for the Gaels though as Santa Barbara put up four runs in the bottom of the third and then a five-spot in the sixth to put the game away. The Gauchos bumped Nobles from the game in the third and went on to get a pair of RBI doubles to contribute to the four-run inning.
The Gaels got one back to start the sixth thanks to a leadoff triple off the center field wall from Armstrong and then freshman Dario Freschi would deliver a pinch-hit RBI single the next at bat to make it 8-3. The Gauchos took firm control of the game though with five more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to put them within run-rule range. The Gaels would go down in order in the seventh to end the game 13-3.
Saint Mary's had more hits than UC Santa Barbara going into the sixth inning but the difference at the plate came with runners on and in scoring position. The Gauchos hit .500 in both categories while the Gaels were .267 from the plate with runners on and just .182 with runners in scoring position.
Redshirt sophomore Finn Chapman completed two full innings after the departure of Nobles and led all SMC pitchers with four strikeouts, allowing just two runs off one hit.
