BVB | Gaels Return to San Jose State to Take on Spartans and Three Other Neutral Site Opponents

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team returned to the continental US after a strong showing at the Heineken Queen's Cup in Honolulu. The Gaels went 4-2 at the event including their first ranked win since 2023, and their highest ranked win in head coach Janice Harrer's tenure. They now return to the Bay Area for four games on Spartan Beach in San Jose, taking on the host Spartans, as well as Pacific, College of Siskiyous and Cabrillo College.
The Gaels ran their record to 10-4 after winning four of six contests in Hawaii last week. Reaching 10 wins in their first 13 games this year matched the Gaels second fastest ever mark to 10 wins, doing so just one game slower than the 10-2 start put up by the 2018 squad. Both the #3 and #5 flights for the Gaels, Clarissa Klein/Bella Reyes and Hannah Glick/Isla Johnson, went 5-1 for the week. Klein and Reyes won all four clinching points for the Gaels, while Glick and Johnson won each of their final five matches after dropping their opening tilt of the weekend.
Saint Mary's will see the Spartans for the third time in as many weeks, and will look to move to 3-0 against its regional foe this season. San Jose State moved to 6-6 for the year after winning each of its final three contests in Hawaii. Sabrina Moore and Anna Salmon have been red-hot of late for former Gael turned Spartan Head Coach Gary Hodge, winning three of their last four from the four spot. Including their two wins this season, the Gaels are 16-4 all-time vs the Spartans.
Pacific is another familiar foe for Saint Mary's, with the Gaels sweeping the Tigers on February 27 on Spartan Beach. They will renew hostilities back in San Jose, as the Gaels look for their second win over a conference opponent this year. Pacific is still searching for their first win of the season, sitting winless at 0-8 under second year head coach Jaida Ward. That said, Pacific has trended in the right direction, taking a set each against Sacramento State and San Francisco last week. The Gaels are 24-3 all-time against Pacific, and have won 21 straight against the Tigers.
After taking on two DI foes on Friday, the Gaels will see a pair of JUCO opponents on Saturday, College of Siskiyous and Cabrillo College. The Eagles of COS are 3-8 on the campaign, while the Seahawks of Cabrillo are off to a 10-3 start. Cabrillo made it to the CCCAA Regionals last year, falling to Fresno City College to narrowly miss a trip to the State Championship round.
