MTEN | Gaels Win Doubles Point But Fall in Duals to Drop Match 4-2 to No. 73 Hawaii in Golden Gate Invite

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team kicked off the 2026 Golden Gate Invite Friday afternoon in a matchup with No. 73 Hawaii. The Gaels came out of the gate hot, securing the doubles point with wins from the Etchecoin brothers and Bastien Maxant/Francisco Duran. Senior Pierre Lieutaud won the lone dual for the Gaels, but Hawaii finished strong, securing all four match points in singles play to win the opener 4-2.
The Gaels have been dangerous in the doubles portion of their duals over the last several weeks, winning the doubles point in five of their last seven matches dating back to a 5-2 victory over New Mexico on Feb. 1. On Friday, Paulo Hugo Etchecoin and Juan Pedro Etchecoin secured their third win as a pair this season, improving to 3-4 overall. The other doubles win for Saint Mary's came from Bastien Maxant and Francisco Duran who got above .500 with their dominant 6-1 win, improving to 4-3 as a duo this season.
No. 73 Hawaii surged back though to win four of the six singles matches to win the opener of the Golden Gate Invite 4-2. Lieutaud has been in and out of the lineup for the Gaels all season long but remains perfect in singles play this season, improving to 2-0 with a 6-3 7-6 win for the Gaels lone singles win of the day.
