SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Saint Mary's Rowing team competed in their first races of the season, finishing in first place in three of five races and setting the tone for an exciting season ahead.
The second varsity eight boat of coxswain Bennet Toth, Chloe Casement, Danijela Concion, Natalie Davis, Ava Delucchi, Faith Freligh, Natalie Sanchez, Ashley Terry, and Allison Skoog took first in their race, finishing up in 7:13.1, seven seconds ahead of second-place finishers Sacramento State.
Also taking first was the varsity four boat of coxswain Rachel Fry, Lilah Marble, Avery Britton, Gwyneth O'Brien, and Kate Hurd. They finished their race in 7:57.9, while the second varsity four boat with coxswain Alondra Aguirre, Maya Nordberg, Alyssa Terry, Lea Glafkides, and Alexa Hernandez took third in 8:09.2.
Saint Mary's novice four boats also took first and third place in their race. Coxswain Alondra Aguirre, Lilah Marble, Lia Segrest, Gwyneth O'Brien, and Allison Skoog took first place in 7:30.2, and coxswain Sophia Cammarosano, Maya Nordberg, Ashlynn Croarkin, Gracie Weichman, and Ady Beloian placed third in 8:09.5.
Showing grit, the varsity 8 boat with coxswain Mavis Read-Kinney, Kelly Nelson, Fiona Samuelson, Mariá Moreno, Carolyn Huckel, Katelyn Robertson, Isabella MacDonald, Skye Kirsten, and Lia Segrest finished second in 7:00.3. Also finishing second was the third varsity eight boat with coxswain Sophia Cammarosano, Fiona Moore, Emma Lopez, Corinne McGrath, Sofia Martyniuk, Gabriella Honig, Alaynnah Flores, Claire Gonzalez, and Lucinda Santos who finished in 7:32.7.
"Today was a great start to the racing season for us," head Coach Brian Ebke said. "Our 2V8+, 1V4+, and Novice 4+ all had big open water wins, with our 2V4+ finishing third in the 1V4+ race. The 3V8+ had a great battle down the course and came up just short of the win. Our 1V8+ didn't have the race they wanted but finished second. And our 2nd Novice 4+ had a strong race finishing 4th to 3 1st Novice 4+s. Most importantly, there's room for everyone to get faster over this upcoming race week and we are all motivated and excited to get back to work."
Saint Mary's also raced in two brand new boats and with two new sets of oars made possible by the generosity of program supporters.
The Gaels will return to action on Saturday, March 14 at the Hornet Invitational.
