CARMEL, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team put together two of its best rounds of golf this fall season, finishing day one of The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate in second place at 19-under-par after 36 holes on Monday. The Gaels carded a tournament best 13-under-par first round in the morning before turning in their second 18 holes at six-under.Â
Third-year Gael Sam Baumuller was at it again in the morning round, recording a team low 65 (-7), just one stroke off his career low of eight-under which he shot earlier this season at the CDA National Reserve in Idaho. The Los Gatos native started his shotgun round on the par-four 11th and recorded six total birdies including a birdie-eagle finish on seven and eight. Baumuller concluded his day with a 66 (-6) in round two with seven birdies and just one bogey to put himself at the top of the individual leaderboard at 13-under-par. He has a four-stroke cushion heading into the final round on Tuesday in search of his first collegiate victory.Â
Saint Mary's owns two of the top three spots on the individual leaderboard with the other belonging to redshirt freshman Trey Tuyo. Tuyo sits in a tie for third place at seven-under-par after his two rounds. Tuyo combined for nine birdies and just two bogeys over his 36 holes including a career low 68 (-4) in round one, his second 68 of the season. Newcomers Will Hardy and Hudson Vedder were the other two counting scores for the Gaels in round one, each carding a 71 (-1). Inigo Izuzquiza swapped places with Vedder as the fourth counting score in the afternoon round with a 74 (+2).Â
BYU leads the 11-team field at 23-under-par as just a handful of groups were unable to finish the second round due to darkness. Saint Mary's sits just four strokes back of the Cougars heading into the final round on Tuesday. Head coach Scott Hardy and the Gaels will look for their second team title of the season, winning multiple events in a single-season for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign. Â Â
