SEASIDE, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team sits in a tie for ninth place out of the 18-team field after day one of the 2026 Saint Mary's Invitational on Monday. A familiar face sits atop the individual leaderboard though as third-year Gael Sam Baumuller finds himself in a four-way tie for first place with an impressive opening round of 66 (-6). The Los Gatos native had just one blemish on the scorecard with a bogey on the par-three fourth, but then birdied five and his closing hole on nine to tie the tournament lead at six-under. Baumuller finds himself tied for the tournament lead for the third time over his four events this fall and leads the team in scoring average at 68.5. Â
Also reaching red figures for the Gaels was Central Michigan transfer Hudson Vedder who finished with a 71 (-1). Vedder sank a sliding downhill eagle putt as he made the turn on 18 and then birdied the par-five first to finish his day one-under. Inigo Izuzquiza and Will Hardy were the other two counting scores for the Gaels at two-over-par. Hardy had a pair of birdies to cancel out a double and play his second nine even par while Izuzquiza was one-under with a clean back nine that also featured a birdie on 18. The team's four counting scores combined to shoot four-under-par on the par-five 18th, taking advantage of the easiest hole on the course on Monday.Â
Also tied with the Gaels in ninth place is Grand Canyon and fellow West Coast Conference member Santa Clara. A three-way tie highlights the top of the team leaderboard with the likes of Cal, Oregon and Washington who all sit at ten-under-par. LOOKING AHEAD
Round two action will start at 8:20 AM with Will Hardy getting things started for the Gaels off the first tee. Live scoring and additional tournament updates can be found HERE or at smcgaels.com.Â
