CARMEL, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team grinded through the third and final round of the 2026 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate on Tuesday, earning a third place finish for its fourth top-five finish of the fall campaign. Along with the quality team result, third-year Gael Sam Baumuller held off the field to win the individual title at 14-under-par for his first collegiate victory.
Ironically enough, Baumuller started his third round three-over including a double bogey on his opening hole. Despite the slow start, Baumuller continued to chip away and found four birdies over his final 12 holes to get back into red figures as the team's low scorer on the day. His 71 (-1) would put him to 14-under-par for the week and clinch the individual title by five strokes for his first collegiate win. The Gaels finished the third round at five-over-par but a crucial birdie on the par-five eighth from sophomore Hudson Vedder helped steady the ship to earn a third place finish along with fellow West Coast Conference members San Diego and No. 21 Santa Clara.
Redshirt freshman Trey Tuyo was the team's next best finisher on the week, concluding his three rounds at four-under-par good for 13th place. Tuyo has been a crucial contributor this fall, recording his third top-20 finish over his five events. Vedder and Inigo Izuzquiza were the other two counting scores for the Gaels at one-over and two-over respectively. Four of the five members of the original starting lineup finished inside the top-40 of the near 70-player field at The Preserve Golf Club.
Freshman individual Landon Abalateo was quite solid over his three rounds down in Carmel, finishing in a tie for 43rd place at four-over-par. Abalateo had an opening round of 71 Monday morning and finished his week with eight total birdies over his three rounds. As a team, the Gaels ranked inside the top-three in par four and par five scoring while also leading the tournament field in total eagles (3) and total pars (171) to represent one of the most consistent teams at The Preserve this week.
Big Ten member Oregon won the tournament with a final three-round score of 23-under-par while No. 33 BYU finished in second place at 21-under including a 14-under second round back on Monday. Final round leaderboards can be found HERE or at smcgaels.com.
