GAELS AT THE WCC TOURNAMENT
The Gaels have played in four consecutive WCC Championship matchups, and six of the last seven. In that span, Saint Mary's has won the conference tournament twice, in 2019 and in 2024. The Gaels are 16-10 all-time as the two-seed in the WCC Tournament, and 24-12 all-time since the WCC Tournament was moved to Las Vegas in 2009. 31 times, the Gaels have had a player named to the WCC All-Tournament team, while five Gaels (Brad Millard, Mickey McConnell, Matthew Dellavedova, Jordan Hunter and Augustas Marciulionis) have been named the WCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
RIDING A WAVE OF MOMENTUM
In order to capture their fourth straight West Coast Conference Regular Season Title, the Gaels needed to win their final eight straight. They did just that, including a signature top-10 win over then ninth ranked Gonzaga to close out the regular season and clinch their share of the conference crown. The Gaels also defeated WCC Tournament three-seed Santa Clara, five-seed San Francisco and six-seed Pacific in that stretch. Over these last eight, Mikey Lewis has been red hot for the Gaels, averaging 17.3 points per game, and scoring double-digits in eight straight for the first time in his young career. Paulius Murauskas is not far behind, averaging 17.1 PPG, while Joshua Dent has buried 21 of 41 three point attempts, averaging 13 PPG. The Gaels have beaten opponents by an average margin of 17.3 points, and have outrebounded their foes by a 14 rebound margin. To put this more simply, THE GAELS ARE HOT HEADING INTO VEGAS.
THE DEFENSIVE CALLING CARD
Known as a defensive minded coach, Head Coach Randy Bennett has continued to see his team thrive on the defensive side of the basketball in 2025-26. The Gaels look to be on their way to being ranked in the top-10 in scoring defense in the country for the fifth consecutive year, currently ranked seventh in the country, allowing 64.2 PPG. Saint Mary's has held nine opponents under 60 points this year, and, as such, is 26-1 this year when scoring at least 70 points in a game. Even more impressive, the Gaels have kept opposing offenses at bay while not relying on massive block, steal or turnover forced numbers, rather defending for full 30 second possessions and forcing tough shots nearly every time down the court.
ABOUT THE FIELD
Looking at the Gaels side of the bracket at the Credit Union 1 Men's Basketball Championship, their potential semifinal opponents are 11-seed San Diego, seven-seed Seattle U, six-seed Pacific, or three-seed Santa Clara. Saint Mary's combined record against these opponents this year is 5-1. San Diego upset LMU in the opening round of the tournament, 66-62, moving to 12-20 on the back of 17 points from Adrian McIntyre. USD will play Seattle U, who sits at 19-12, and is led by WCC Defensive Player of the Year Will Heimbrodt. The winner of that clash will face 17-14 Pacific, and standout forward Elias Ralph, fresh off of earning his first first-team All-WCC nod. Santa Clara is the highest seeded team the Gaels could see, at 24-7. The Gaels and Broncos squared off on Wednesday, February 25, with the Gaels besting the Broncos 86-67 to earn the regular season split. Allen Graves scored 20 off the bench for SCU, but was outdone by the 21 dropped by Mikey Lewis.
